Time. It is never and has never been a good predictor of how well you know someone, or in this case, how well you think you know someone. I’ve been there, I’ve done that. More times than I would rather, and yet some times, I still make that mistake. At least in this case, I’m not paying for it dearly.

Time. They say it heals. I say it just makes you forget. Sometimes, time can bruise too. It cuts, it scalds and it bleeds you. Sometimes it hurts, but other times, you might find yourself yearning it. In this case, time has done nothing else but numb.

Time. It’s a terror to people. Some don’t realize its importance while others, don’t realize it’s limits. Some, just forget that it just consists of three hands of various lengths on a numbered surface. With time, comes age. With age, comes maturity. With maturity, comes wisdom and as such, is time = wisdom? In this case, time is merely the essence of the day, of the years, left behind to rot.

Time. Makes you think you know things. People. But is one hour of an acquaintance a weaker predictor than a lifetime’s worth of it? In this case, who knows?

I’ve had friends come and go. I’ve had life events come and go. Will I know any better? Will you know any better next time? What if you’ve been married for 40 years and find that you don’t really know it that well after all. What if the same blood flows through your veins, the same personality doesn’t. So what if you’ve known it for almost a decade? Maybe you’ve never really known it at all. Maybe all this while, it was just a mirage, a surface with an underlying serpent waiting to strike. And yet, that may be a tad too harsh.

But people change. Or do they?

We progress. Or do we?

One thing remains for sure.

You think you really know someone? Think again.

Maybe someone knows you. But you sure as hell might not know them.

In this case, I’ll probably never know.

So what’s a friend?
