How am I enjoying my first semester of year 2? Let’s just say a short semester isn’t the best way of starting it off. An assignment due on the third week, mid-term examinations on the fourth and fifth week, assignments due on the fifth, sixth and eighth week, finals on the ninth. It’s week after week of assignment and study deadlines and before you know it wham! the semester’s over and the 7-8 week break is here. In conclusion, short semesters offer very limited breathing space and you gotta do what you have to do in order to survive.
Sacrifice.
I’d be back in Penang for almost the entire week if not for the short semester. I’d be back to spend time with relatives I see only once in one to two years without rush.
When I figured out my schedule for this semester, I was ecstatic at the thought of a long weekend – Thursdays to Sundays off and classless. But then I took a peek at the course outline – particularly the one for PSY207 Human Personality. Let’s just say I wasn’t too ecstatic after realizing the rush the next couple of weeks will be.
On the other hand, I am enjoying Prof. Reyes’ lectures very much. Of course, typical of all lecturers, there are times when he can drone on and on about various theories but I do happen enjoy his brand of humour. It can be very dry and insulting. The perfect way to perk an auditorium full of 170 dozing off students. I can proudly proclaim that this is the third week and I only dozed off during the first two lectures (2 our of 6 lectures) and today, I barely slept in Dr. Goh’s PSY205 Social Psychology lecture.
Let’s just put it this way, anyone who has been in classes or lectures (or churches) with me know my very special ability enabling me to sleep anywhere as long as a person is speaking in front. He can be strict, humourous, entertaining, interesting or boring – I will still succumb to slumber. For a majority of my first year lectures (with the exception of Ms. Winnee’s two core research lectures) I spent lecture hours (be it 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours) dozing off for at least 60% of lecture time and yet I scraped by with average B grades. No, I’m not ecstatically proud of the fact I can only manage an average grade, but considering the amount of attention I put in classes, I dare not expect too much.
Getting back to the topic of me not sleeping, staying awake for more than two consecutive classes is considered an amazing feat for me! One of the few reasons I stayed awake during every single one of Ms. Winnee’s Quantitative Methods classes was because it was purely mathematical. It did not require me to sit dumbly writing notes. I kind of had to think… plus she had quizzes every now and then to her whim and fancy – left me no room to fall asleep.
Anyway, back to my amazing feat – I fully intend on striving to maintain this record of wakefulness for a majority of the entire semester!
Wish me luck!
Alright, if I want to maintain this record, I should head to bed now or before you know it, sleep will take me over during Social Psychology…
